What cha listenin' to?

Postby Gavin Trott » Tue Oct 27, 2009 7:14 pm

OK

What's on the turntable/in the cd player/in the car or on the ipod that's doing it for you currently?

For me, now listening to

Possibilities by Herbie Hancock.

Well, Herbie Hancock and friends really. Great concept, Herbie and friends get together and each combination works out a 'song' to do, and 'workshop' how to do it, some prepared, lots improvised!

The sound is glorious, production wonderful, and the music is fantastic.

Not all combinations work brilliantly, but all are interesting.

And to hear Carlos Santana burning up the speakers, playing like a bell, with those "Santana' rhythms in the background ... followed by an amazing jazzy meets Santana piano from Herbie, slightly off centre, slightly syncopated, but all class ... !!!!!

Add in John Mayer, Paul Simon, Sting, a brilliant version of When Love Comes to Town and much more. Great stuff!

Oh, and it kicks with the volume way up! :!: :D

Over to you, music lovers?

..

I'm currently loving the new album from UK down-tempo group Zero 7, 'Yeah Ghost'.

For those of you who aren't acquainted with Zero 7, have a youtube search for "Destiny", "In the waiting line", "Today", or "Home". Their break out album was Simple Things back in 2001, which was followed up by When it Falls and the Garden.

Yeah Ghost, however, is a complete departure from the first three albums, being more up-beat than down-tempo. It actually took me a while to get into the album as it was not immediately accessible music. After the third play, however I've really hooked on it. Great experimentation with soundscapes, tempos and percussion, with amazing vocals. Worth a listen if you're persistent.

I've been listening to the new David Gray album - Draw theLine - a bit lately. A little different to his older stuff, but he is still the best lyrics writer since Dylan.

I went to see him when he was in Sydney a couple of weeks ago and found out he must be a wine drinker. In the song Sail Away from his best selling album White Ladder there is a line that goes:
I've been talking drunken gibberish, I've been in and out of bars.

Which he changed to:
I've been talking drunken gibberish, I've been drinking that shiraz.

Good music.

If you get the chance to see David Gray live you must go. He is one of the best performers I have ever seen. He is 10 times better live than his albums; the sort of performance that brings a tear to your eye, or makes you smile or makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

I saw him last tour at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and he was good, but this performance at the State Theatre was just sensational. He only did a 2 night mini tour. The tickets only went on sale 2 weeks before the concert!!! Who does that these days. Anyway... I think he will return for a full tour next year so do yourself a favour and see him if you can.

Rolling Stones "Sticky Fingers" & "Exile on Main Street", Nick Drake's "Five Leaves Left" and most Wilco albums are on heavy rotation. Tom Waits & Augie March always go down well with red wine late at night. And Dylan is always in the mix. Leonard Cohen too.

I used to punish my brother's copy of "Big Hits - High Tide/Green Grass" about 40 or so years ago. Bought "Get Your Ya Yas Out", for me the Stones' best album, much better than the other album I bought, "It's Only Rock and Roll" though the title track is a good'un. Hey you, get offa my cloud!! The only Tom Waits album I bought is "Heart Attack and Vine", reckon it's a cracker. Enjoyed listening to Leszek Karski (Hippos) and band on "Live at the Basement" the other night.

Love Mumford and Sons... good times.

Also getting into Muse The Resistance CD, Police Certifiable Blu-ray, Eskimo Joe Inshalla and revisiting some old 80's awesome favourites The Fixx Reach the Beach and Ultravox Rage In Eden.

Wonder how old I am.......???

P.S Like your choices too jeremy.. although some a mixed bag e.g Stones and Dylan run hot or cold for me. Love Cohen.

Cheers

Get Yer Ya Yas Out has just been re-released with extra tracks from the gig and the full Ike and Tina Turner support slot. Reminds me, I have to pick that up soon! Great album.

I'm partial to Dig radio, but at this very instant Dire Straits, Tunnel Of Love is currently playing... Sultans of Swing should queue up next I think. Maybe then Brothers in Arms and Telegraph Road...

Have you been following Mark since Dire Straits?

Last few releases very good, more soulful rock, lovely understated guitar, and in high rotation here.

Have been flogging a bit of Pink Floyd lately to chill out, particulary "Animals", very under appreciated album in my opinion. There is something about Dave Gilmour's guitar playing that just takes you away from the world and it's associated worries!! (Or is it the wine consumed at the same time??)

Like Soul Music?

Like modern R&B that sounds like it could have come from Stax

try

Raphael Saadiq - especially the disc - The Way I see It

Great music, great singing, fun all wrapped up together.

On frequent and regular listen here ... turn the volume up!

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here, The Wall
Lindstrom - Where You Go I Go Too (Scandinavian lush electronics)
Laura Veirs - everything - US folkish muso
and oodles of other stuff across the spectrum

hmmm

JJ Cale, meets Dylan, with a hint of Clapton, and more than a touch of Tony Joe White, and a voice that has really travelled the road and lived the life.

Great fingerpickin' guitar, sparse backings, and great songs ....

Ray Boneville - Going By Feel

is in high, and I suspect long, rotation here!

I've been listening to a bit of the Floyd myself leading up to the Pink Floyd Experience (cover band) concert in a few weeks time.

I tend to prefer the more melodic early '70s & later stuff (Meddle, Dark Side, WYWH, Momentary Lapse & Division Bell, not to mention the live albums Delicate Sound of Thunder & Pulse). I still can't really get into Animals & The Wall though (not to mention Final Cut and Roger Waters' solo stuff) - they have occasional moments I really like like Empty Spaces/Young Lust, Hey You and Comfortably Numb, but overall I find them hard work to listen to. I guess I'm not a fan of Roger's Voice at the best of times and find some of his ideas more than a little pretentious, especially when he assumes he has total control of a project.

Cheers,
Ian

Well most Floyd is pretty pretentious really- definitely boys' music I have found :)
I actually really love Animals and Meddle ... I'm not so hot on their later stuff which is really just Dave Gilmour and Co.
Altogether very atmospheric music though..

Well, it proved to be an interesting show, pretty good overall although I'd rate The Australian Pink Floyd Show (used to be called "Think Floyd" when they formed in Adelaide nearly 20 years ago) better. It was a little freaky to see the lead singer swap duties with the drummer two songs in - while he was pretty good with the Roger Waters voiced stuff, the first was a lot better with Gilmour's (he returned for Wish You Were Here). The guitarist was excellent, but I felt they could have used a second one to play the rhythm parts in some songs where he was doubling up. The backing girls were brilliant on Great gig in the Sky, the light show was (to quote Roger Waters) "a pretty fair forgery", although the animations/films weren't in anywhere in the same league of the real thing (or what the TAPFS does now): http://www.aussiefloyd.com/

The set list in the first half was pretty unusual since it was supposed to be selected from the most requests on their website - lots of the oldest (and longest) stuff first up which made me wonder if a bunch of hippies hijacked the voting, or they went with their normal set. Since it was musically a little tighter than the second half and the audience reaction was pretty sedate, I'm leaning towards the latter - from memory it was:

First half:
Welcome to the Machine
Dogs
Fearless
Set Your Controls for the Heart of the Sun
Arnold Layne
Astronomy Domine
Sheep
Echoes

Second half:
Shine On you Crazy Diamond (parts 1-5)
Learning to Fly
Another Brick in the Wall (part 2)
Keep Talking
Breathe
On the Run
Time
Great Gig in the Sky
Money
Us and Them
Any Colour You Like
Brain Damage
Eclipse
Wish You Were Here

Encores:
Run Like Hell
Comfortably Numb

Ha Ha...I voted for most of those songs, except for Fearless, Arnold Layne and Astronomy Domine!!
The Vineyard Manager and myself were going to go to this show, after we played Floyd everyday all vintage to chill out (and to upset the youngster's with our "old man hippy music").
Great to hear it was a good show. Sorry to have missed it now!!

Listening to Silversun Pickups right now.

I listen to JJJ (not as much as I used to) as a habit from when I was a practising musician (sounds like practising Christian), and keep picking up on songs that belie my years
