What cha listenin' to?

Here is the gathering spot for all sorts of chats and discussions that are not (necessarily) wine related.

Love interesting music, music with style, class and real 'feel'.

Get into

Corey Chisel and the Wandering Sons - Death Won't Send a Letter.

Brilliant, original and very slightly alt.country meets alt. blues

Good singing and great songwriting!

Hi Ricardo
If you like musical dvd’s, The Last Waltz is definitely worth a look. The Band played their last gig in San Fran (1976) and Scorsese filmed it, some great footage and interviews woven in too.
They had a load of guests play the songs with them, e.g. Neil Young, Ronnie Wood, Van Morrison (awesome/hilarious performance, extremely wasted), and of course Bob D.

Recently I’ve found myself shuffling on my Ipod, but I keep skipping to the Stone Roses songs, and still loving Temper Trap, glad to see them sweeping up on the award circuit.

Cheers
Michael

Lou Reed In Concert, a compilation of songs performed live in Verona and Rome in early September 1983. His singing is ordinary as always but just fits the songs as it should - he wrote them. The lyrics are good but the guitars just soak me in rock and roll, the drummer's bloody good too!

Showing my prog-rock roots again...

Really enjoying Steve Hackett's last double live CD (Live Rails) while finishing off a few leftovers from an outstanding Mount Mary Quintet vertical. I rolled into Muses when they announced they were closing (Adelaide's biggest and best independent music store where I spent endless hours looking, listening and buying all sorts of stuff in my teens and long after - I'm really sad to see it go. ) and picked this up with a couple of other things I figure I'm not going to see anywhere else other than maybe eBay.

Image

I haven't been a huge fan of Steve's solo work in the past, but this live effort is brilliant - newer songs like the powerful Fire on the Moon seem to be every bit the equal of classics like The Steppes and Spectral Mornings, of which these versions are breathtaking (well, apart from the drumming gaffe halfway through Spectral Mornings - how did they miss that? :? ). At times his guitar work sounds a bit like David Gilmour, Mike Oldfield, Gary Moore and even his replacement at the Genesis live shows, Daryl Steurmer. These heavier pieces are countered by the Gaelic-like Ace of Wands, and the beautiful vocal melodies of Serpentine Song, Emerald & Ash, Every Day and Sleepers, but often even these folk inspired tunes open up into heavier, jazz-rock fusion passages. That jazz influence shows up also in Clocks, Ghost in the Glass and Los Endos, although the versions of Firth of Fifth, Blood on the Rooftops, Fly on a Windshield/Broadway Melody of 1974 are pretty true to the Genesis originals.

Some clips from the related tour(s) I found on youtube:

Steve Hackett is the sort of act we should get in for the Guitar Festival in Adelaide - what the hell is going on with that thing? Either get some really big name acts like Eric Clapton or get off your arse and promote what shows up (I didn't know Derek Trucks was playing until it was way too late to get a spot), or preferably both. Ranny & a few dozen nobodies playing "Smoke on the Water" at Elder park on acoustic guitars (and virtually everything but guitars) get news coverage, but nothing else gets a mention - big fucking deal. Lance Armstrong ain't showing up for his $$$ million fee anymore for the TDU, so spend the money on this to make it something other than a bad joke. Rant over.

Cheers,
Ian

I haven't really strayed too far after "rediscovering" Steve Hackett a few months ago...

Image

Almost all of Out of the Tunnel's Mouth is on "Live Rails", and to be honest I slightly prefer the live versions of most songs where he uses less distortion and effects - that said the sound quality is amazing for something recorded in his home! The exception would be "Sleepers", which has an additional, moody acoustic introduction and dreamy finish that seem to make the song more complete. As for what isn't on the live release, "Nomads" is another song that again mixes genres, flamenco guitar, moody Latin rhythms and smooth vocals leading to a wild jazz-Latin fusion electric solo, while "Last Train to Istanbul" finishes a well rounded and eclectic album with its blazing sitars.

Image

Fire and Ice is another live release a year on from "Live Rails", captured from the one show at Shepherds Bush in London. Half the set list has changed and IMO isn't quite as strong, "Valley of the Kings", "Sierra Quemada" and Nick Beggs' Chapman Stick solo "The darkness in men's hearts" the highlights along with Steve's introductions (like "Watcher of the skies" as just something he wrote in the back of the van on the way there!). John Wetton and Steven Wilson make guest appearances in rare performances of "All along the Watchtower" and "Shadow of the Hierophant" to make it a DVD essental for fans who can't see Steve perform live, and all prog-rock fans in general.

Cheers,
Ian

After watching the movie American Psycho a few weeks ago I've been delving through some old CDs from the late eighties, and from straight from the "whatever happened to" category came Bruce Hornsby & the Range...

Image

I've always found their mix of jazz, bluegrass and rock very unusual, but many subjects of their songs are just as startlingly relevant here today - environmentalism (Look Out Any Window, Barren Ground), racism and the class divide/treatment of the underprivileged (Fire on the Cross, The Way It Is, Lost Soul), the youth of the country towns yearning to get away to the city, and the envious longing of those left behind (On the Western Skyline, The River Runs Low, Across the River).

Cheers,
Ian

Alternating between my favourite band ever - Rush - and an Australian band - the Jezabels. The latter seem to have old heads on young bodies.
Wine, women and song. I've worked in a winery, and been a professional musician...hmm let's not go there.

Ha ha - rush. I listened to them a lot when I was younger and still dust off vinyl when the family goes away for a bit of old time's sake. Hemispheres mostly. Also tend to imitate Neil Peart with limited success in the shed (La Villa Strangiato, Toom Sawyer, etc.....)

A couple of months ago a friend visited from interstate with his new girlfriend, and we blasted my old bootleg version of the edited version of this concert in the wee hours of the morning...

I finally ended up getting the 10th Anniversary DVD with the complete show a few weeks ago and still have it in my head - Paul shedding tears at the drum kit during Don't Dream It's Over and dropping a stick in the middle of Locked Out, Neil forgetting the words during Fingers of Love & Four Seasons in One Day - nobody cared and the audience of 100,000+ filled in admirably. Hole in The River takes on a whole new dimension after the circumstances of Paul's death too.

It mightn't have been their strongest live performance, but the emotion more than made up for it.

Cheers,
Ian

Radney Foster.

An American country singer with an amazing voice, and a great writer.

I am waiting deliver of his new acoustic album. His a re recorded his first album, made around 20 years ago.

Keith Urban has sung some of his songs, one becoming a hit.

Cross Canadian Ragweed.
Just discovered them, and just received their 9 CDs.
They play red dirt music. Sort of American country rock.
Great stuff.
Lead singer has an amazing voice.
And they dont wear hats!
