Restaurant Review: Black Ruby

Got taken here last night by my sister who is a local in this town.

Black Ruby 344 Rathdowne St Carlton North 3054

Starter $12 - $19
Mains $20 - $29

BYO and Licensed, I didn't look at the wine list but there were a few interesting looking things on the shelf, Penley Estate, Yerring Station, Peter Lehmann but I don't know the prices. Not sure on corkage either as I didn't see the bill :) . Glassware was good, we didn't decant the wine so I am not sure about decanters but my guess is they would be available. The food was fantastic, for starter we shared the bread and dips and assorted dumplings. For the mains I had the pepper encrusted fillet mignon (blue) which was cooked to perfection and could have been cut with a spoon it was so tender. Others around the table had Porterhouse with Shitake mushroom, Sword fish steak and Quail all dishes were excellent and well presented. I would also reccomend the spinach in garlic and butter as a side dish.

We had a bottle of 05 Grosset Polish Hill with the starters and a Peter Howland 03 Great Southern Shiraz with the mains. The Grosset was fantastic and by far the best riesling I have ever drunk although I haven't had that many. The Peter Howland was OK but I suspect some Brett may have be present as all at the table agreed that is was a bit barnyardy.

Glen,

I haven't been for dinner but I have for breakfast and lunch a few times and the food has always been fantastic and service good.
Being a local, I should have ventured there for dinner before now but I will in the near future.

Cheers
